After taking a short 360-shower, I used the air puff dry cycle. Fresh and clean, I stepped out and used the robo-stylist for my hair and to neaten up the lines of my beard. Looking less like a dirty face, the scruff would stay for now in case we had to run. I checked out my wrists and down my body, and I was shocked that the booster patches were still in place. I would have expected them to have given out a long time ago. Maybe they weren’t needed anymore.
Before I showered, I had placed my clothes in the Cleano unit, so they were ready and waiting for me. Lifting them out, I placed them up to my nose and took a big sniff. There was none of my scent on them, and they smelled fresh. Why I sniffed them, I don’t know. Maybe a part of me didn’t trust that they wouldn’t stink. Later, I would fire up the robo-tailor to give me a few more clothing choices. A quick, ten-second bite-down on the full-mouth cleaner topped everything off, making me feel ready enough to give a newsblast conference.
Stopping at the door, the humor drained from me. Even after checking to see if the medication patches were still there, I had been more fixated on cleaning up my exterior than on finding out where I stood medically.
I called out for the house robo-doctor. A few seconds later the door opened, and a robot came into the room. This unit had a humanoid head set on an extensible neck; its three arms were mounted high on a slender white rectangular body with rounded edges. This was set above a low and wide base. For complex surgeries, it could remotely control or add on modules for a total of eight long and thin arms, giving the appearance of a robotic octopus.
After giving it a brief summary of the situation, I asked the robo-doctor to run a full set of medical diagnostics on me. It asked a few questions as it worked. It applied two four-inch square pads to my stomach and to the middle of my back and lowered my shirt.
The robo-doctor finished the tests and retracted its arms. Its face pursed as if thinking, and it said, “You are a most interesting case, Mr. Newcastle. Under normal circumstances, I would love to submit your data to the medical community for further evaluation and study. Maybe your situation will change, and that will become possible. The nano-docs have been most helpful in giving me data on your overall health, hormonal levels, and the extent of the damage. You are a very lucky man to still be with us. I will continue to monitor your health during your stay with us. I have given you some additional boosters and attached some tissue cleaning pads to your torso to help.”
“So I am good to go?”
“Most assuredly,” said the robo-doctor. Happy and relieved, I went out to meet with Lauren and Jessica.
